Del Rio’s Restaurant, Washington, D.C.

Del Rio’s in Washington, D.C., normally had a two-month waiting list to get a reservation. That is, of course, unless you were one of the privileged few; the lucky diners in that category could call up Mario, the Maître D, and get a table pretty much whenever they wanted. The problem for the lucky few was that it was difficult to let your hair down in such a public location. The Secretary of State was not only one of the lucky few who knew Mario and could get a table whenever she wanted, but she had found a solution to the problem of having a good time in such a public place.

Gray walked cautiously along the terrace, looking toward the courtyard. He was on full alert, as he passed restaurant guests, scanning them all, watchful for any danger. Those in European clothes got more scrutiny than others.

Gray descended the steps into the lobby and said to the restaurant’s Maître D, “Reservation for Gray.” He spoke confidently since the lobby was crowded with people who had arrived early for their table, not wanting to be late.

The Maître D’ looked down at his reservations and smiled, “Ah, there we are, Mr. Gray. This way, Sir.”

The aromas coming from the kitchen in the restaurant were very appetizing, and Gray could feel his stomach talking to him in response. The Maître D led him past the kitchen area where open fire grills were glowing, covered with large, thick, juicy steaks, all sizzling. They continued to his reserved table. The restaurant was already full of diners, some watching him. Gray was nervous; it had been a long time since he had a date, and this felt like a date.

Finally, he decided the eyes watching him were just curious and no threat and he began to relax.

After seating Gray, the Maître D pulled out his napkin from the water glass on the table, shook it slightly, and gave it back to him.

“Can I get you a cocktail, Sir, while you wait for your company?” Gray ordered a scotch.

“Any special blend, Sir?”

“Your standard scotch will be fine.” Gray did not plan on drinking it anyway; he wanted to be fully alert, just in case.

“I hope you find this booth suitable, Sir.” The Maître D finally left Gray to his own thoughts. As he waited for his guest, he watched the restaurant. When his eyes drifted over to the entrance, he saw the Maître D escort a tall, exquisitely dressed brunette to his part of the restaurant. When they kept coming toward him, Gray smiled. Finally, the Maître D delivered the brunette to his table, pulling back a seat for the guest.

Gray smiled conspiratorially at his guest as she slid into her chair. “Brunette tonight?”

After years on her detail, he was familiar with all of the crazy disguises McQueen used when she wished to just blend in and have a normal outing. Usually, he was the lone Secret Service agent to
